Downtown Corridor Study

Yelm Avenue & 1st Street Corridor Study

OPEN HOUSE RESULTS:

Thanks to everyone who made the open house held December 13th a great success!  We received excellent feedback which will help draft the downtown plan.  We welcome any additional thoughts you have on the draft concept.

The concept boards can be viewed here and you are welcome to submit comments via an email to downtown@yelmwa.gov or using the comment form prepared for the open house.

PROJECT SUMMARY:
The City of Yelm has partnered with SCJ Alliance on an effort to identify strategies that balance the Yelm Avenue and 1st Street corridor’s character as a main street with their function as a regional highway. This project will develop transportation-focused strategies to promote economic development opportunities and improve mobility for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and transit. The effort will culminate in a prioritized action plan for improving safety, access, and circulation within Yelm’s downtown core.

STUDY AREA

The study will focus on the area surrounding the intersection of Yelm Ave (SR 510) and 1st Street S (SR 507), the commercial and civic heart of the city. We will consider the surrounding street network between SW Railroad Street and 4th Street SE and between SE Mosman Avenue and Jefferson Avenue NE, including critical pedestrian connectivity points.

SCHEDULE & OUTREACH:
The current schedule delivers a final plan to City Council by March of 2019. Between now and then, there will be a number of ways for you to get involved in the planning process including attending a public open house and visiting our table at community events like the Farmer’s Market as well as reviewing and commenting on the draft plan which will be made available on this webpage. Your ideas and comments will help shape the recommendations in our final action plan and we look forward to hearing from you!
